Former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will fight Brian Vera (23-6, 14 KOs) on Saturday , September 28, 2013 at Staple Center Los Angeles California. This is Chavez’s first fight since being fined and suspended for testing positive for marijuana.
The 12-round super middleweight matchup, to be televised live on HBO, was officially announced Wednesday by Top Rank, Chavez’s promoter.
Chavez, 27, son of the legendary Mexican boxer, tested positive for marijuana following his first career loss, to Sergio Martinez, on Sept. 15 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Chavez nearly knocked Martinez out in the 12th round after Martinez had dominated the first 11 rounds, but Martinez hung on and won by unanimous decision.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission indefinitely suspended Chavez and fined him $900,000. The NSAC later reduced the fine to $100,000. Chávez , was the WBC champion before his loss to Martinez. This is the first fight in Los Angeles for Chavez since he won the title by defeating undefeated interim champion Sebastian Zbik in June 2011. Vera has won six of his last seven bouts, and has a four-bout winning streak working, including victories against Sergio Mora, former world champion Sergei Dzinziruk, and Donatas Bondoravas. Vera is currently rated No. 1 by the WBO.
